An Introduction to Drafting

Drafting, sometimes called drafting, graphic representation of objects, machinery, and their functional component parts which describe the technical engineering plan of a product to the artisans or craftsmen who make the item. The term “drafting” is derived from the Latin word meaning to draw. It was used to refer to the practice of constructing architectural drawings to represent a structure before the actual building was completed. It later evolved into the modern technique of drawing computerized designs, usually with the use of computer-aided design programs (CAD) which can be programmed by a computer-aided drafting system.

The traditional method of drafting involved the use of pencils, pens, and machine tools. Nowadays, drafting uses computer-aided drafting software programs. CAD program uses computer-aided designing software in order to build the CAD design of the structure.

Drafting has changed over the years. It once involved manual drafting tools. The earliest drafting tools were simple pencils, quills, and the like. Modern drafting tools today are far more complex than the earlier tools. Today’s modern tools help to create quality drawings with great accuracy.

Today, the most common tool in drafting is mechanical drafting. Mechanical drafting uses drafting tools such as drafting tables. Mechanical drafting is used to construct mechanical parts, such as motors, pumps, compressors, and the like. Mechanical drafting also includes the making of mechanical parts such as gears, axles, and the like. Other mechanical parts which require special drafting procedures include electrical parts and the like.

The most complicated mechanical drafting process is the aerospace drafting process. This is a specialized task, which requires skilled professionals to complete. Aerospace drafting uses computer-aided drafting systems, such as CAD, in order to create detailed drawings for a variety of items like aircraft engines, planes, ships, and the like.

It is important for those working in the mechanical drafting industry to obtain formal education to become competent in the field. Many states and even countries require their drafters to obtain formal training in drafting. In some countries, they need to undergo a one-year program in drafting.

The most important aspect of mechanical drafting is the ability to draw detailed, accurate, and professional looking drawings using the correct tools. There are several tools available for mechanical drafting. These tools include mechanical drawing supplies, drafting tables, drafting chairs, and drafting stands, mechanical drawing brushes, drafting torches, drafting wheels, drafting lathes, drafting pliers, drafting staplers, drafting scissors, drafting machines, and drafting wheels, and drafting drills. Drawing supplies include pencils, pens, markers, crayons, erasers, and other drawing supplies. Drafting chairs are also used in mechanical drafting, while drafting stands are used to hold the drafting instruments.

The drafting chair is usually made of wood or metal and is a simple table on legs that support the drafting instrument while allowing you to move it about the drafting room while drafting. The drafting chair usually has a small desk beneath. The drafting stand is similar to drafting chairs except that it has a top and bottom that is hinged to allow you to place drafting tools and supplies on the desk. The drafting chair is often covered in cloth.
