MPAA Public Administration Degrees

Masters of Public Administration (MPAA) Program. Masters of Public Administration (MPAA) is a doctoral degree program that prepares students for numerous management positions, including executive leadership and management positions in the nonprofit sector.

The MPA Program has three main areas: Public Administration, Public Policy and Government. The program emphasizes research, communication, decision-making, ethics and social justice. Students acquire practical skills and knowledge of the administrative processes of public policy.

Students must complete a minimum of 70% of their student’s coursework in order to pass the required exams. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better in order to earn their degree. Students in the MPA program must also complete four semesters of approved course work, at least one semester of internship, and two years of study at the University of Minnesota College of Medicine. In addition to passing their undergraduate degree requirements, students in the MPAA must successfully pass the MPAA examination. The exam is available to all MPAA students, but is particularly important to candidates who wish to enter a rewarding career in academia.

For the first few semesters, students who wish to earn their MPAA must enroll in MPA Program courses that are approved by the University of Minnesota’s Office of the University Registrar. These are core courses; the other courses required to complete the program can be electives.

It is important to note that there are special exceptions to the standard UESA examination guidelines.

Students are encouraged to consult with their school counselor to find out what specific course requirements are necessary to take the MPAA exam. Courses may include accounting, economics, human resources, law and business, public policy, taxation and finance, government and budgeting, business law, and even the history of government and politics.

Upon completing an accredited MPA, students will be able to work in public administration and management positions in many private and government agencies, think tanks, think-tank fellowships and think tanks, and non-profit organizations. They may even begin their own private practice consulting firm or pursue a PhD in Public Administration.
